Overview
Welcome to A-Star Math Team Classes, a program dedicated to preparing middle and high school students for math team competitions. This is an in-person only program designed for students in the Bay Area, CA. All classes and practices are held at the AlphaStar Main Office (100 Saratoga Ave Suite 100, Santa Clara, CA).
Team contests require more than just individual skill. In this program, students work directly with others to solve hard problems. Facing these mathematical challenges as a group helps students stay motivated and teaches them how to collaborate effectively under contest conditions.
Target Competitions
The program prepares students for and includes participation in team contests such as:
- Berkeley mini Math Tournament (BmMT)
- Mustang Math Tournament (MMT)
- Berkeley Math Tournament (BMT)
- Stanford Math Tournament (SMT)
- Caltech Math Meet (CMM)
What to Expect:
- Training for Competitions: Students practice with the specific problem types and formats used in team math contests.
- Teamwork: Students learn how to discuss mathematical concepts, correct mistakes, and solve problems as a group.
- Challenge & Motivation: Students work on difficult math problems that keep them engaged and motivated to improve their skills.
Fee
Program Fee: $375 per student (covers 12-14 two-hour sessions).
Competition Fee: $50 per competition. This fee is only collected from students actively participating in a specific tournament.
Financial Aid: Both program and competition fees can be fully waived for families who need financial support.
Application
Applications open on June 1, and the review process begins on June 15. Applications are processed on a rolling basis until classes are full. After reviewing the submitted form, we will send an approval email with instructions on how to pay the $375 program fee.
Code of Conduct and Agreement
Please read our full policies regarding student behavior, academic integrity, and parent volunteering commitments before completing your application.
Levels and Course Info
A-Star Math Team Classes offer two grade-based levels. Each class has a 20-student capacity and is taught by top-level high school student instructors with extensive competition experience. The entire program and its competition teams are overseen by Program Manager Mehmet Kaysi.
To provide relatable mentorship, classes are taught by top-level high school students who have extensive personal experience in the math competition circuit.
Fermat Class (Middle School)
- Expected Background: Designed for students comfortable with the difficulty of a Pi Contest Fermat Medalist, AIME Qualifier, AMC 10 Honor Roll, MathCounts State Qualifier, or AMC 8 DHR student. These benchmarks indicate course rigor rather than guaranteed admission. Because space is limited, final selection depends on the applicant pool, though students near these thresholds may be considered.
- Competition Focus: Prepares students for middle school team tournaments, such as the Berkeley mini Math Tournament (BmMT) and the Mustang Math Tournament (MMT). Additionally, students will practice for individual competitions, including MathCounts, AMC 8, AMC 10/12, and AIME, to further sharpen their skills.

Gauss Class (High School)
- Expected Background: Designed for advanced competitors, matching a difficulty level comparable to a USA(J)MO Index of 220+. This index is a guide for course rigor rather than a guaranteed acceptance checklist; final admission depends on the strength of the applicant pool relative to our strict capacity.
- Competition Focus: Prepares students for advanced high school team tournaments, such as the Berkeley Math Tournament (BMT), Stanford Math Tournament (SMT), and the Caltech Math Meet (CMM). Additionally, students will practice for individual competitions, including the AMC 10/12 and AIME to further sharpen their skills.
